CCTV Monitoring Australia

Print friendly version

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) monitoring is the use of television cameras to transmit a signal to a specific, limited set of monitors. It differs from broadcast television in that all components are directly linked, and that the signal is not openly transmitted, though it may employ point to point wireless links. CCTV monitoring is often used for surveillance in areas where there is an increased need for security, such as banks, casinos, and airports. They may also have military uses. CCTV monitoring was developed as a means of increasing security in banks. Today it has developed to the point where it is simple and inexpensive enough to be used in both commercial and domestic home security systems, and for surveillance.

ANALOG CCTV

ANALOG

ANALOG CCTV monitoring systems use 75 Ohm coaxial cable to connect multiple cameras to a multiplexer which can feed several video recorders in a central control room. The images can be viewed real time via several monitors, via one monitor equipped with a switch to change to the camera desired, or to monitors that could accept multiple video feeds in separate windows. For the past 20 years, monitoring and surveillance applications have been served by analog technology. CCTV has traditionally been recorded to VCRs (video cassette recorders), and because of its perceived ease of use and manageable price point, analog was probably the right choice at the time of purchase. However, the rise of digital has laid bare analog’s many shortcomings. Analog CCTV monitoring systems are generally maintenance intensive, offer no remote accessibility, and are notoriously difficult to integrate with other systems.

DIGITAL CCTV

DIGITAL

DIGITAL CCTV monitoring is one of the latest developments in the world of CCTV. Digital CCTV monitoring uses wireless or USB digital still cameras that can take 1600 x 1200 pixel resolution images of the camera scene, either on a time lapse or motion detection basis. Images of the camera scene are captured and transferred automatically to a PC or laptop either via a USB cable, or wirelessly, and it takes only a couple of seconds for even large 1MB images to be downloaded from the camera. If the laptop or PC is accessible over the Internet then images can be selected and uploaded to a remote server, and the camera window can be monitored live. Implementing a digital system does not require throwing away those trusted (and already paid-for) CCTV cameras. With IP-Surveillance, you can still use all the cameras, lenses, and cables in place via a step-by-step migration to digital technology.

IPTV

IPTV produces a stream of video which is transmitted over a wired or wireless ICT network allowing the video images to be monitored, recorded, published or stored for archival use anywhere on the network. IPTV lowers the total cost of ownership as compared to legacy CCTV or analog video systems by leveraging the utilisation of investment and coverage of the existing ICT network infrastructure. There are no expensive, proprietary cabling requirements and adding IP cameras is as easy as adding a PC, making IP video the clear choice for applications that require multiple remote cameras and locations.
